As a child, if I wasn't out riding a horse, I was inside drawing pictures of one. Now, a lifetime later, as the "Old Grey Mare" my art studio is named for, I am still doing the same thing. I am still working outside with the horses themselves, though no longer training green horses or galloping cross country over fences or sorting cattle on a cutting horse.

I do feel fortunate to be able to enjoy those disciplines still through my artwork. When you've spent years learning to do it right with a horse, your inner vision can still get it right on paper.

All artwork for sale listed with dimensions and price and will be matted for standard sized framing. Shipping not included in the purchase price.

Due to limitations of the Internet, please understand the digital images on the web page cannot show the detail and delicacy that makes this medium so unique. Because of this my artwork is sold with a money-back guarantee. The artwork must meet or exceed your expectations. If it does not, simply return it and I will refund your purchase price.

I do accept a limited number of commissions. Please contact me if you would like to discuss a commissioned portrait of that special animal in your life.

For pricing for commissions, payment options and shipping costs please email me

Weltstern

This is a memorial portrait in graphite of my foundation Oldenburg stallion, Weltstern, who was truly a once in a lifetime horse. Imported from Germany, I purchased him as a 9 year old and loved him dearly until his death in 2012, at the age of 30. He was always a gentleman in all ways, well mannered, responsive and people oriented and I will forever be grateful for the opportunity to have had him in my life.

Original is not available, but fine art giclee prints, matted for standard 11 x 14 frame, are available through the studio.

Original graphite study. Actual image size 4.5 x 6.5

Matted for standard 11 x 14 frame. Shipped matted but not framed.

The reference photos for this image were taken years ago when I was still living "out west" and breeding Quarter Horses. There were several breeders that got together periodically at one of the local arenas and worked together to train for shows. The smaller arena and informal atmosphere made it an ideal opportunity for photography.

The original of this was done as a unicorn foal as a gift for a friend who collects unicorns. I have really enjoyed working this particular image and just keep thinking of more fun things I can do with it.

The model was a part Arab sportpony foal now in my broodmare herd that was particularly photogenic. I find living with my models makes my artwork so much more personal and my knowledge of the character behind the photos often seems to affect the art as well.

Original graphite with colored pencil accents. Price $150. Image size 8" x 10"
Shipped matted but not framed

I have been fascinated by race horses all my life and the limited racing at the county fair in Montana was always a major attraction for me all through my teen years. Now, with the move to Kentucky, I have been able to truly indulge in the addiction.

Detail of Red Silks

This detail of the original is shown in gray scale, which can give a slightly more accurate image of the shadings and detail in the original graphite.
